Welcoming Noah Part #1

On Monday when I wrote my 40 week post I did so knowing that I was heading to the hospital that night to start the process of having our little boy. The decision to be induced was based on a number of factors. While none of them involved anything truly medical (i.e.-we could have waited a couple of weeks to see if he would make the move on his own) it was the decision that was best for our little family. Originally I was going to go in after my due date on Thursday night. However, we realized that the entire city of San Francisco was probably going to aim for that since the next day was 11.11.11. Thus, the decision to induce Monday night. I should also mention that I had no birth plan going into the big day other than I was 100% ok with pain management meds and 100% wanted an epidural.

SO, Monday night at 5pm I called OB triage to see when we should check in. They said the sooner the better so I gave Scott the call and he abandoned the client meeting he was in and headed home for a quick dinner of Amici's and we set off for the hospital.

The drive to the hospital was very calm and surprisingly Scott and I weren't overly anxious. It honestly felt a bit like we had packed the car up for vacation and we were just setting off for the airport! We also packed enough stuff to go on about a week long vacation!!!

The following 36 hours or so are a bit of a blur but the timeline of events went something like this:

11.7.11
7:30pm-arrive at hospital and check in for the big event. I got my IV, signed a zillion papers and was then escorted to our labor & delivery suite. Our first nurse was Taffy and she got us settled in our GIANT room. I got hooked up to IVs and monitors and we did more paperwork.
Before I had 700 wires connected to me.
A funny aside...Taffy asked Scott if his name was with two t's or one and Scott responded, "one". After a really good laugh (he thought they were asking about our last name) we were back in the business of trying to get this shin dig started.
Waiting, waiting, waiting.
Once we began watching the heart rate and contraction monitor we realized that I was indeed having a few contractions on my own. It would not have been anything close to enough to have me admitted (I couldn't even feel it) but it was nice to know that my body was at least starting to think about having the baby.
The first contraction!
All tucked in for the long haul. The monitors make me look like I am having triplets!
9pm-Taffy administered Misoprostol. This is a little pill that is inserted to hopefully make the cervix start dilating and effacing. While we waited for that to take effect, Kyle came over to keep us company and share a little wine with Scott (I opted out as I imagine they frown upon drinking while having a baby).
Scott getting ready for the long haul!
11:30pm-By this time I was having lots of contractions. They weren't very painful but I definitely felt them and knew we were on the right track.

11.8.11
Well, it was kind of premature excitement with the "on the right track" thinking. Originally they had hoped to give me four doses of Miso but because I was contracting so much they weren't able to move forward with this plan. Our new nurse, Page, checked to see if we were getting my cervix to play along with the contractions and learned we had only progressed 1cm...a whopping 2cm dilated (she also deemed me 90% effaced but we later learned that it was more like 30-40%...they didn't break that news to me until much, much later...good thinking by everyone!).
Still mobile. This was all the crap I had to drag around with me any time I got out of bed.
1:30am-Since we weren't able to do any more doses of Miso the decision was made to go ahead and start the Pitocin drip to try and get my cervix ready for the rodeo. This was also the time that I gladly accepted an Ambien so I could get some sleep (I was contracting too much to be able to sleep without assistance).

9:30am-Dr. Ulrich arrives!! I also got a new nurse, Susan. There is something very exciting about seeing the doctor...it felt like we were really going to get some great news and be ready for the next phase. HA! She checked me out and noted that despite all my awesome contracting I was actually only 1.5cm dilated and barely effaced. Cue the balloon.

I have no idea what the medical term is for this device but in my book it is on par with a stretching machine, bed of nails, and any other torture device you can conjure up. The balloon is inserted and then inflated with water to mimic the baby's head pushing on the cervix in hopes of making it dilate. With a death grip on Scott's hand I put on a brave face as they did the procedure. It was a horrible, horrible pain and at some point someone said, "It's ok to let it out" and I just started bawling. Stoic is my middle name and I finally let my guard down and gave in to the pain I was feeling. Scott was wonderful and gave me all the support and encouragement in the world. So did my new friend, Fentanyl. Immediately after the balloon incident they said, "we can give you some Fentanyl for the pain"...um, YES!!! Scott laughed when it washed over me and said it instantly looked like I had had a few shots at the bar.

11:15am-Mom arrives. She stayed home with poms on Monday night and came up to participate in all the fun!

noonish-Once the Fentanyl wore off I became very aware of my contractions. Unfortunately, they were 98% located in my back (aka, back labor). I upped my pain scale declaration from a 3 earlier that morning to a 7 or 8. While it was very uncomfortable, the pain was fleeting (as contractions are).
Looking pretty thrilled about the only "food" I was allowed to eat from midnight on Monday through delivery.
Sometime in the afternoon I got another dose of fentanyl to be able to get some rest through the contractions.

6:30pm (ish)-The balloon is deflated!!! Dr. Ulrich deemed it a success and I was 4cm dilated. The plan was made to go ahead and break my water to hopefully take advantage of the progress we had made.

7:15pm-The anesthesiologist arrived to administer the epidural. This woman was a miracle worker. A couple of tiny pricks of numbing meds and I felt nothing as she got me all hooked up.

7:45pm-Dad arrives. Once we knew I was going to be induced we alerted my dad and he was able to change his flight to come a day early to be there for baby's arrival. My mom had arrived the previous Thursday just in case I went early ;-).

While I was in bed unable to feel anything from the waist down (or eat, just saying) a little party commenced in our room. There was dinner, wine, and Guinness for the non-laboring parties. Kyle also stopped back by for a little pre-celebration.
Dinner party Labor & Delivery style
10:15pm-Dr. Ulrich broke my water. This was kind of a non-event since I couldn't feel anything. At that point it was more waiting to see how my body reacted. She also prepared me for the fact that her on-call hours ended at 9am the next day so if the baby hadn't arrived, she wouldn't deliver me. I was not optimistic about how the next 12 hours were going to unfold.

11.9.11
1am (ish)-Dr. Ulrich returned to check on our progress. Her first comment, "well, you aren't going to believe this"...Of course, I thought we had made zero progress. Turns out I was fully dilated and we were ready to go! Apparently I was also having some rock star regular contractions so Dr. Ulrich decided we would wait an hour before I began pushing to see if the baby would descend a bit more.

2am-Our nurse, Erika, came in and prepared for me to begin pushing. We asked how long she thought it would take and she guessed an hour or so. I think once she actually got me situated she felt a little differently as the preparation of the room for baby's arrival seemed to shift into high gear. Erika was watching my contraction monitor from across the room, counting my pushes from afar. This led to a few missed pushes and a little bit of a fear that the baby was going to just appear with no one there to catch him!

Luckily, this didn't happen as Dr. Ulrich arrived soon after for the big event. I actually began pushing 2:15am and Dr.Ulrich arrived soon thereafter. Scott was by my head encouraging me every step of the way. Throughout the entire three day process he rarely left my side (unless it was a popsicle run). I could not have asked for a better husband & friend than he was to me. Even now, looking at the little life we created I am at a loss for words about how happy I am that Scott is his dad and that we made this little being that we get to share. BUT, I am getting ahead of myself...
All of a sudden, the Dr. said, "With the next push, I think he'll be here". This was probably the most "real" moment of the entire process for me. The little guy who had been kicking inside of me for 9 months was finally going to be here to meet his mom and dad. After the one big push, I was told to give a few half pushes, one mini push and then I saw him.

Noah Scott Retchless made his grand arrival at 2:39am on November 9th, 2011.
Noah's first picture
I am officially a mom.
The new family (Noah is being camera shy on my chest) with Dr. Ulrich. As you can probably tell from this post, we are so thankful for her. She has been nicer than she had to be every step of the way in this process.
Part #2 coming soon...

40 weeks.

How Far Along: 40 weeks. We made it to the end!!!
Right before we headed to the hospital
Size of Baby: We'll find out this week...any guesses?

Total Weight Gain: Total pregnancy weight gain is 22.5 lbs.

Maternity Clothes: Not for long! It is a touch bittersweet to be bidding adieu to my pregnant belly.

Movement: Enjoying the final kicks I'll feel him make on the inside. Again, the bittersweet part of the end of my pregnancy.

Symptoms: Fear?! That is a bit dramatic but I am definitely getting anxious about the huge life change that is coming our way this week.

What I Miss: Not really anything major this week. All thoughts have been directed towards labor/delivery and meeting our little man.

Girl or Boy: Boy!

Baby name hint: No hint this week...you'll just have to wait for the big reveal!

Belly button In or Out: Out. Always out.

Stretch Marks: Nope. WOO HOO!!!

Cravings:No cravings but I have been carbo-loading for the big event. I decided that delivering a baby is on par with any of the athletic endeavors I have undertaken over the years and therefore I need to nutritionally prepare :-).

Best Moment This Week: My mom arriving. We have done all of the last minute preparations and are now ready to meet the man of the hour!

39 weeks. 1 to go.

How Far Along: 39 weeks. If he is not here by the time we hit 40 he is being evicted!

Size of Baby: Not 9 lbs. PHEW! This is what the doctor was able to deduce at our last appointment but wasn't able to tell us how big she actually thinks he is.

Total Weight Gain: Holding at 22 lbs.

Maternity Clothes: Yes, but my robe remains my favorite piece of fashion. I am not trying to be Rachel Zoe here!

Movement: Yes, and it is becoming apparent that he less room to move around in there. His movements are strong and short versus a lot of wiggling around.

Symptoms: Oh, lots. The major one is I-want-to-meet-him-itis!

What I Miss: Sleeping on my stomach or back. I can hardly wait to not sleep on my side!

Girl or Boy: Boy!

Baby name hint: The first letter of his name can be found in the second half of the alphabet.

Belly button In or Out: Out. Always out.

Stretch Marks: Nope.

Cravings: I caved and consumed copious amounts of Fruity Pebbles this week. I can't say this is a pregnancy related craving necessarily but they sure were tasty!

Best Moment This Week: The Cardinals winning the World Series! What a great year for Baby R to be born.

In other news: I have decided that my nesting has turned a bit into something resembling preparation for the apocalypse. I am apparently going to be rendered completely useless (both physically and mentally) for at least 30 days post partum according to my preparation for Baby R's arrival. I have recently realized that I am having a baby, not brain surgery, so I will likely be able to function upon returning home. I guess you can never be too prepared, right?!
There can only be one more of these! WOO HOO!!!

Happenings

While 99% of our life is consumed by awaiting Baby R's arrival, we have managed to stay rather busy with this, that, and the other thing around the Bay Area.

There have been Stanford games, dinners out, doctor's visits, World Series watching, house work, naps, and a smattering of things in between.

Pretty much it all circles back to the proverbial pot that has yet to boil though. Hopefully this week will be a bit more relaxing than last. Scott and I were both very on edge last week but for some reason we are now back to some semblance of patiently waiting. I think it is knowing that there is an end in sight...that, or denial.

Anywho...some pictures because that is much more fun than my rambling!

A really bad picture of me, but I had to document our Stanford game attendance.
Karina and I just moments before the CARDINALS WON THE WORLD SERIES!!!!
We made it to the pumpkin patch :-). Granted we were there for a grand total of about 15 minutes we managed to come home with 9 pumpkins...6 are purely for decoration. Can't wait to take Baby R next year!
A pumpkin that is about the size of Baby R. Luckily the pumpkin people didn't think I was trying to steal a pumpkin under my shirt :-).
Baby R's pumpkin. Smaller than him, but a much cuter picture of me.
Scott evaluating his pumpkin options.
Found the perfect one!
All carved and ready to great our trick or treaters tonight. Isn't Scott's scary?!
Just one of our many Sunday house projects. We also gardened, re-planted house plants, cleaned the grill, evaluated a gutter situation...all items that weren't on the official nesting list but needed to be tended to.

38 weeks. 2 to go.

How Far Along: 38 weeks.
Here's hoping there aren't many more of these purple shirted pictures!
Size of Baby: Big enough to be born! Hint, Hint Baby R! But really he is about 7 lbs and anywhere from 19-21 inches long. To reiterate...he is the size of a newborn!

Total Weight Gain: 22 lbs.

Maternity Clothes: Yes and I am looking very forward to wearing my regular clothes again. I never bought a lot of maternity clothes since I can wear gym clothes 98% of the time thereby making me completely underwhelmed by my closet these days.

Movement: Yep. I officially freak if he doesn't move constantly though. I have become very paranoid that something is going to go wrong over the past couple weeks.  The doctor said I have a better chance of getting hit by a bus. Here's hoping neither happen :-).

Also, he gets the hiccups at least once a day, often twice.

Symptoms: I have been diagnosed with the pregnant lady waddle. Even if I concentrate I can't really avoid walking like a penguin.

What I Miss: Going in the attic. There is some seriously good nesting that could be done up there! Organizing, finding holiday decorations, saving winter clothes from moths...it is like a pregnant/OCD person's dream.

Girl or Boy: Boy!

Baby name hint:
“O captain! My Captain!
Our fearful trip is done.
The ship has weather'd every wrack
The prize we sought is won
The port is near, the bells I hear
The people all exulting
While follow eyes, the steady keel
The vessel grim and daring
But Heart! Heart! Heart!
O the bleeding drops of red
Where on the deck my captain lies
Fallen cold and dead. ”

Belly button In or Out: Sometimes in, sometimes out. Just depends on the moment.

Stretch Marks: Nope.

Cravings: Nothing. As a matter of fact I am little indifferent to food at the moment. 50% of the time it just makes me feel nauseous to eat.

Best Moment This Week: Learning that I am 1cm dilated and 25% effaced! While this by no means indicates that labor is imminent it is a nice reassurance that my body knows it is time to start thinking about letting this little guy meet the world. We sure are ready to meet him!

AND, bonus best moment of the week...we are the proud owners of a stroller. We can now bring Baby R home safe and sound (and stop saying hello to an empty stroller in our living room).

friday randoms

  • I feel like a caged animal. All of a sudden I want to go anywhere and everywhere. I decided this morning London seemed good (after seeing Pippa all cozy in a pea coat with a coffee...). I don't even like London! I'm sure it is the "don't look over there" phenomenon...you know, where as a result that is the only place you want to look. I can't travel so now I am craving it.
  • Speaking of caged animals...
I have failed to mention this previously but I have been SUPER sensitive about animals throughout my pregnancy. For example, this Ohio lunatic who set all his animals free and killed himself has me 100% unable to watch the news or visit news websites (unless you count people.com). The images of the animals is pretty much more than I can handle.  And don't even get my started on the ASPCA commercials with Sarah McLaughlin singing...

I am sure most people feel the same way about this so I will give you another example...about 3 months ago I was driving to Ikea and saw a dog being led by animal control on one of those mean looking stick/harness leash things. The dog looked scared and like he was definitely a stray. Same week, I saw a cute little puppy being walked by a man who looked less than fit to be taking care of himself, much less a puppy, and was also walking with his boa constrictor draped over his shoulder. These images continue to pop into my head all too frequently and I just want to rescue and snuggle all those little beings. Even a squirrel that has been hit by a car makes me upset thinking about his little squirrel family.

It's a good thing the humane society is not nearby or we might have a gaggle of fur babies. In response to this insane sensitivity to all things animals I have been giving Lola and AP about a zillion extra snuggles and making sure to keep them safe and sound here at home!

All this to say, with how I feel about random animals and my own fur babies I can't even begin to fathom what having a baby is going to be like. I DO know one thing though, this baby isn't going to have to guess whether his mom and dad love him!

  • I am hoping we get to a pumpkin patch this weekend. Scott and I have carved pumpkins every year and I want to continue that tradition. It will be a no brainer next year with our little man around but we could easily write it off this year and just paint my belly as a place holder!
  • We made risotto from scratch last night! This was a first for both of us and it turned out DARN good. Pats on the backs for us!

  • My stroller. Oh, this is turning into a saga. I won't bore you with details but my first order has now been cancelled and I will be buying it from another retailer AND having it installed this afternoon.

  • I crossed off "get car tires rotated" from the nesting list this week AND Baby R's baby book arrived AND the hospital bag is ready.
Nesting is dangerous! My hands have taken a beating...at one point I think we were up to 3 band aids on a single hand plus a handful of misc. scratches you can't see in this pic.

  • Back to the dr today. Here's hoping it goes better than last week :-).
  • I am really enjoying the fall weather and I am disappointed it is supposed to get back up to 88 on Sunday :-(
  • I am 98% sure I want to sign up for the Napa to Sonoma half marathon in July. Any one done it before? Any feedback? Seems like a good "get back in fighting shape" plan just in case I need the kick in the pants post baby and holidays!

37 weeks. 3 weeks to go.

How Far Along: 37 weeks. We are officially full term!!

Size of Baby: 6.5 lbs and loooong.

Total Weight Gain: 21 lbs.

Maternity Clothes: Yes. Also, my advice, don't clean out your closet during your 9th month of pregnancy. Since a lot of clothes haven't been worn in months I was ready to give everything away! I had to resort the bags for Goodwill and rescue some oldies but goodies :-).

Movement: Still moving all over the place. This makes me especially happy this week after our little scare last week. Moving = happy baby.

Symptoms: Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy. Sometimes I think I might be narcoleptic or have mono. Then I remember I am 37 weeks pregnant!

What I Miss: Still nothing new to report.

Girl or Boy: Boy!

Baby name hint: We're getting close...only 4 more hints (hopefully less).  His name does not start with a vowel.

Belly button In or Out: It has kind of popped. It isn't obscene turkey baster popped but it can definitely be noticed through a tight shirt.

Stretch Marks: Nope.

Cravings: Nothing that has not been reported yet.

Best Moment This Week: Date night on Saturday with Scott. We started with the usual conversation:

Steph: What do you want for dinner?
Scott: I don't care. You're the pregnant one, what sounds good?
Steph: I don't know.
Scott: What about X?
Steph: No. That sounds horrible.
Scott: Ok, then what sounds good?
Steph: I don't know. What do you want?

You get the idea. I decided during round 5 of this little discussion that we were getting dressed and heading to the city! We had an amazing time and I am so glad we got out of the house and enjoyed some of our last moments as a family of 2 (plus two fur babies of course).
growing, growing, growing
